PLAY FAIR’S DEBUT SINGLE “ELSEWHERE” ALCHEMIZES WANDERLUST

SoCal indie-emo group Play Fair have undergone a significant transformation, culminating into their debut single, "Elsewhere." The group used to be known as No Surprises, a Radiohead reference that fit them well—but "Play Fair" just feels so right! The nuance in "Elsewhere" solidifies the choice for a name change.

Lyrically, the track grapples with the idea that perhaps, the grass isn't always greener. Rather, one must transmute pain into pleasure, whether through art or any other means. Otherwise, they will simply become trapped in a cycle of discovery, and they may never escape.

There's a lot of accountability, as the song begins by suggesting that mistakes don't create an entire villain. However, after a rough patch, it's normal to crave an escape.

Sonically, "Elsewhere" sounds like floating on a cloud. There are familiar emo melodies and tricks, but modernization fits "Elsewhere" like a glove. This is a truly stunning piece, with tight harmonies complementing twinkly guitar riffs perfectly.

Play Fair submitted "Elsewhere" to the NPR Tiny Desk contest, and I'd say it's a strong contender.
