Softmax channels angst and transformation in her single "No ID." From catchy vocals to a new, alternative sound, it's obvious the Chicago-based artist is going through a rebrand. With production from herself and her partner, Sam Hudgens, guitar from Cameron Winter and MGMT guitarist James Richardson, and mixing by Joel Ford, the lineup harnessed a synergy that is hard to beat.
Led by smooth, heavy guitar, the track explores and experiments. It has an upbeat energy that's quick and demands attention, something that Softmax doesn't shy away from in the track.
Hypnotic and electric, the track features sultry vocals that mesh flawlessly with its striking undertone. With vocal effects similar to the wispy delivery of Tame Impala, it is obvious Softmax is not the same as she once was. Lyrics cry out a tale of exhaustion, with the constant feelings of inadequacy in the eyes of an impossible judge. True to the name, "No ID" explores identity in a reactionary way. The raw, authentic bursts of apathy in her voice carry on that feeling.
Production is top-notch; each instrument sounds incredibly clear while still maintaining the edge she excels at.
This is a side of Softmax we haven't seen before, but the future looks bright. "No ID" signifies a career-defining moment where she is looking in the mirror and taking charge of her future.
